For more than 25 years, Guidant, a Division of Boston Scientific, has advanced the practice of less-invasive medicine by providing a broad and deep portfolio of innovative products, technologies and services across a wide range of medical specialties.

These less-invasive medical technologies provide alternatives to major surgery and other medical procedures that are typically traumatic to the body. In less-invasive procedures, devices are usually inserted into the body through natural openings or small incisions and can be guided to most areas of the anatomy to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical problems.

Project Description

Managing a medical instruments company is complex far beyond just precision manufacturing using exotic materials and space age techniques. Government regulation, FDA and requirements for tracing manufacturing raw material lots, patients, doctors, hospitals, insurance providers and hundreds of other details for each device produced, promised to be a management nightmare for Guidant. Guidant management came up with a strategy to use off the shelf software to automate each separate business process. A data warehouse for compliance and reporting would tie all the separate databases together to provide the needed data integration.

Scope of Services

5x Technology assisted Guidant with the vascular intervention data warehouse by developing a strategy to link data from disparate systems so that it could be accurately extracted and loaded into the data warehouse. 5x Technology consultants developed a data warehouse structure to integrate the data so that any relationship from design to raw material or purchased part to hospital to doctor to patient to patient observation records could be accessed and developed into a meaningful report or graph in moments.

In short, 5x Technology helped Guidant build a system that provides peace of mind. For a patient that means the knowledge that their doctor's information needs regarding their vascular device and health condition can be instantly serviced. For Guidant executives it is the knowledge that Guidant is fully compliant with government reporting requirements and that in a medical emergency, response will be instant, accurate and reliable.

“We have a better view of our customers and our internal needs, all thanks to the inovative approach of 5x Technology”
